Keep the gesture small
There is a very specific kind of panic that comes from someone arriving at a first date with a gift bag large enough to contain a kitchen appliance. Let’s avoid that.
A funny little gift works best when it asks almost nothing of the other person. They don’t need to display it in their home, match your generosity, or work out what it means for your shared future. It can just be a joke you both get to enjoy.
The gift is an opening line you can hold.
Think pocket-sized, easy to carry, and comfortable to decline. Save anything expensive, intensely personal, or suspiciously engraved for a relationship that has actually happened.
Three ideas for the right kind of awkward
A soundtrack for small setbacks
A tiny sad violin gives a harmless inconvenience its own dramatic soundtrack. Save the joke for missing brownies or a late train, rather than something your date is genuinely upset about.
A question with a useful tangent
Bring one silly question rather than an entire personality assessment. Would you rather have a theme song or a laugh track? Which entirely useless superpower would you choose? Answer it yourself too, so it feels like a conversation.

A ridiculous mascot, later
A googly-eyed pickle can be magnificent, but it helps to know the other person’s sense of humor first. Keep the more baffling objects for the date after you’ve discovered a shared appetite for nonsense.
Give it, then let the date happen
You do not need an unboxing ceremony. “This made me laugh, so I brought it along” is plenty. Give them room to react however they react.
Put the prop away when the joke has landed. Ask a real question. Listen to the answer. The nicest thing about a good icebreaker is that eventually you forget you needed one.
The easy test
Would this still be a nice moment if they didn’t want to keep the gift? If the answer is yes, you’re probably in the right territory.

If they’ve said they don’t like presents, believe them. If the venue makes carrying things awkward, leave it at home. And if you’re buying something because you think it will guarantee chemistry, put down the checkout button.
You can always bring the joke without the object. A silly question, a terrible pun, or a shared observation costs nothing and fits in every pocket.
